Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

+ Where are you located?

Ronin MMA is located at 10820 Jefferson Hwy in River Ridge, Louisiana. We are the red building on the corner of Jefferson Hwy & Florida Ave, across the street from Dot's Diner.

+ What is the 'Warrior Community'?

The Warrior Community is what we like to call the environment we created at Ronin. Martial arts is about inclusivity, family, & community, and these are important values that serve as the foundation of our mission

We believe that everyone is equal on the mats regardless of fitness ability, background, age, gender, race, etc…

Ronin is all about building a tribe of like-minded people & creating a space where everyone is welcome, no matter what.

We want Ronin to feel like your second home, whether you’ve been with us for years or you’re brand new to our family. It’s important to know that you belong here.

Our coaches and members all work together to achieve goals, no matter how big or small, connecting outside of the gym doors and forming strong bonds that last a lifetime

+ What are the benefits of martial arts?

Where do we start? Martial arts has a range of benefits- from building confidence to developing self-defense abilities. There are also numerous physical & mental health advantages- learning martial arts can help you lose weight, get stronger, improve flexibility, & increase endurance as well as relieve stress and anxiety. Plus, martial arts is great for both kids & adults, helping to enhance fitness in addition to instilling valuable principles like respect, discipline, & good sportsmanship.

Check out our Jiu-Jitsu and MMA pages to learn more about how these programs can help you achieve your goals.

+ Does martial arts promote violence?

Not at all. In fact, traditional martial arts is about teaching peace, discipline, & respect. Even more, studies have demonstrated that martial arts, especially for recreational purposes, promotes health & wellbeing, builds self-concept, & improves confidence.

Ronin does not condone the use of martial arts techniques to inflict pain on others, but rather as a means of self-defense, self-control, & fitness.

+ Do I have to compete?

Absolutely not! While competitions are generally a great way to test your abilities, they aren't mandatory & we will never pressure or force you to compete. We understand & respect that it isn't for everyone.

After all, competition is only one side of martial arts training- there are also those who are hobbyists, enthusiasts, or practicing as a means of exercise or self-defense.

+ What should I do if I want to compete?

Let us know! If you are interested in competition- whether grappling, kickboxing, or MMA fights- our coaches will do everything they can to help you prepare.

Many of our members who train jiu-jitsu decide to participate in local grappling tournaments as a means to challenge & test themselves.

But we also have several amateur & professional fighters who represent Team Ronin at MMA events in Louisiana, Mississippi, & more. We're always looking to add to our team as long as you're willing to put in the work.

Kids & Martial Arts

+ Do you offer kids classes?

Yes! We love having kids in the gym. In fact, we have a whole program dedicated to helping children learn martial arts.

You can learn more about our kids’ program on our Warrior Kids page.

+ What age do your kids classes start?

Our Warrior Kids program starts classes at 5-years-old. However, we may accept younger children depending on ability and/or maturity.

Not sure where your child may fit? Please reach out to us! We’d be happy to discuss available options for your family.

+ What are the benefits of martial arts classes for kids?

Just like for adults, martial arts has a slew of benefits for children of all ages, ranging from motor skill development, physical fitness, & teaching important values that will help them succeed throughout all stages of life.

You can read more about how kids can benefit from learning martial arts on our Warrior Kids page.

First Time/Class Information

+ Who should try martial arts?

Everyone! Ronin offers classes & training for young, old, men, women, boys, & girls alike. Even more, we tailor experiences for beginners through advanced athletes.

Martial arts offer a one-of-a-kind workout & act as an alternative, more exciting means of exercise. It also develops coordination, flexibility, body & spatial awareness, strength, speed, & power. All of these benefits serve to improve health & increase physical literacy & daily functionality across the lifespan.

Martial arts also provides a solid foundation for any future endeavors in the exercise & sports world, whether pursued recreationally or on a more serious level.

+ Am I too old to start training martial arts?

Here at Ronin, we believe that no one is ever too old to roll. Or strike. In fact, martial arts is a great activity for older adults because of the many physical, social, & mental benefits that come with training.

Plus, our coaches will help you adapt or modify any exercises necessary to help facilitate learning while mitigating risk of injury.

+ Do I already need to know martial arts to come to classes?

Of course not! Many of our members are first-time practitioners when it comes to martial arts. The majority of our classes are a healthy mix of beginner, intermediate, & advanced individuals, and all of our coaches do an excellent job modifying exercises to meet the fitness levels & needs of each person.

While Ronin members & coaches work together to create a supportive and understanding atmosphere, we are also sensitive to the inclinations of wanting to work out in a more private setting. Thus, if the idea of a group class remains intimidating, our coaches offer personal one-on-one sessions to help take the pressure off & allow you to develop your techniques as well as build your strength at your own pace & comfort.

+ Are all classes beginner-friendly?

Yes! Our classes are structured in a way that benefits everyone in attendance- whether they are there for the first time or a lifelong professional athlete. All of our coaches & members are there to help because we're more than just a gym. We truly strike to create a welcoming community where everyone feels welcome, regardless of skill level or ability.

We also offer a jiu-jitsu fundamentals class on Thursdays evenings (you can see it on the class schedule here), which is perfect for beginners! This class will help you become more comfortable & familiar with the basic positions that the more advanced movements build upon. (This is also why it's a great class for even more experienced practitioners- improving your fundamentals is important to enhancing overall performance).

+ Can I try a class for free before signing up?

Absolutely! In fact, we encourage it. All first-time customers are eligable for a free trial to give you an opportunity to try different classes with different coaches & get the full Ronin Warrior experience.

If you'd like to try out a class (or two) for free, fill out our brief free trial request form & we'll get you set up for the class(es) that best suit your interests & goals.

+ What do I need to bring or wear?

For first-timers, we understand that you probably don’t own your own equipment, & that’s okay. We have plenty of spare gloves, shin guards, & GIs. So, all you need to bring is you. And a water bottle (although we do have a water fountain). Clothing should be comfortable, breathable, & allow for movement. Don’t worry about shoes- we highly recommend being barefoot to avoid slipping & to preserve the longevity of the mats.

Upon signing up for a membership, you will need your own pair of gloves & hand wraps for striking classes. We also recommend shin guards & a mouthpiece for safety.

If you are interested in our BJJ program, a Gi is required, unless you are only attending No-Gi classes. When the time comes, coaches can provide recommendations and/or set you up with a Ronin gear order.

+ Is it normal to feel lost in the beginning?

It’s completely normal to feel uncomfortable or intimidated when you first walk into a new gym, sit through your first class, or try anything new for the first time!

But we strike to foster a culture of respect & hospitality. After all, we were all beginners once, & we don’t become great on our own. All of our coaches & members are here to help you along the way. That's what our Warrior community is all about. And as long as you keep coming back, we guarantee that feeling will pass sooner than you think.

+ Do I have to participate in rolling or sparring?

Of course not- no matter how long you've been with us, you never have to do anything you aren't comfortable with. We get it can be intimidating, especially if it's your first day.

(And if it is your first day, it's often beneficial to stick around & just watch other members roll because it helps you better understand what BJJ & jiu-jitsu are all about!)

However, live rolling & sparring (see the Other section below for definitions) are an important part of training martial arts. They provide the opportunity to practice what was covered in class & they help you better understand the techniques you've learned as well as your ability to use them in a more dynamic situation. This is especially crucial if you're taking classes as a means of learning self-defense.

Plus, we are never rolling or sparring with the intention of causing damage. In fact, the people that roll/spar in an over-competitive manner usually make the least amount of progress in their training.

Our coaches keep a close eye on everyone participating to ensure nothing gets out of hand. We're never out for blood, but instead practicing control over our movements while trying to hone techniques.

Membership Information

+ How much do memberships cost?

Money is important, which is why Ronin is very transparent about membership prices. We offer various membership options to suit the different needs of our community, from monthly plans to 12-month commitments.

You can see a full breakdown of membership prices here.

+ How do I cancel my membership?

We get that things happen, situations change, & life throws us curveballs. While we hate to see you go, as stated in the customer agreement, memberships can be canceled at any time by providing in-person or written notice.

We do require a minimum of one week’s notice to avoid automatic drafting of the next month’s dues.

Before you cancel, though, make sure you talk to us about other possible options.

Other Information

+ What is a GI?

A gi (pronounced "gee," as in guarantee) is the traditional uniform practitioners wear for both BJJ & judo. It consists of a jacket, pants, & belt (of which the color denotes your rank).

Apart from it's connection to the history & traditions of the grappling arts, gi's also serves a practical purpose. They are made of heavy, reinforced fabric & designed to withstand more punishment & movement than regular clothes, especially the many gripping & throwing techniques associated with BJJ & judo.

Gi's are more than just a uniform, though. It's a symmbol of what it means to be a martial artist, so it should be worn with pride!

+ What do "rolling" and "sparring" mean?

Rolling (BJJ & jiu-jitsu) & sparring (kickboxing, boxing, & MMA) both refer to forms of "live training," in which you test your skills & abilities agaisnt another person. They are opportunities to safely try out techniques in a more realistic manner agaisnt someone who is trying to do the same thing.

Rolling & sparring are not necessarily high-intensity, competitive fighting match-ups but rather chances to practice techniques, movements, submissions, combinations, defense from specific positions, etc. in a controlled manner. They both enable fluid practice & learning, & help students identify areas of strength as well as opportunities for improvements.

+ What does "Open Mat" mean?

Open mat is a way to continue training jiu-jitsu on your own. It is time set aside on the schedule for active members to come train with each other outside of the structure of class, which is often limited by time & individual schedules.

Open mat is a great opportunity to implement new drills learned in class, roll with other members that may not be able to make the same class times as you, & get more comfortable with different jiu-jitsu techniques.

Open mat sessions can be either gi or no-gi; it's really up to you guys!

You can see when open mats are schedule by viewing our class schedule.
