Types of Wrestling

There are a variety of wrestling types that exhibit both traditional and modern grappling styles:

  • Greco-Roman: Most similar to the styles used by ancient civilizations, and relies on throws, headlocks, body locks, arm drags, and other offensive techniques like the suplex

  • Freestyle Olympic: Has links to “catch-as-catch-can” wrestling styles, which use almost any technique to throw down and pin one’s opponent, including trips and scissor holds. The legs are used as both offensive and defensive weapons, allowing participants to shoot and defend shots

  • Folkstyle: Similar to freestyle wrestling, the legs are used defensively and offensively with the specific aim of controlling one’s opponent (also known as scholastic wrestling due to its use in many high schools)

  • Sumo: Japanese style of wrestling that incorporates cultural rituals and subtle feints and swerves to avoid opponents’ charges

  • Sambo: Russian style of wrestling that was developed as a form of unarmed combat for military use in the 1920s and shares many similarities with Judo
